| Why did Jesus curse the fig tree on the way to the temple? It wasn't the season for figs, so how could he expect to find any? And why did it make him mad? |

There are two seasons for figs in the Middle East; the first crop blooms before leaves sprout in the spring and then again in the fall. Jesus, seeing leaves on the fig tree, rightly expected some fruit. There is simply no justification for the claim that figs were not in season when this account occurred in scripture. Whether or not Jesus was “mad” is actually a non-issue. First, He was the Son of God and therefore justified in all of His actions despite our astonishment. Second, in the context of this passage, Jesus is making a point to his disciples about the lack of fruit in His chosen nation Israel. He simply used the event to teach that though Israel will never be discarded, she would not bear fruit for the kingdom in this present age...this privilege is given to the Church. |
