Depression can make someone feel unsaved. Pastor Mark has often said, "Be my feelings what they will, Jesus is my Savior still". Depression is a very convincing liar. Take your mom's feelings seriously and encourage her from the Word of God. Show her the promises that she can hang onto regardless of how she's feeling. I John 5:13, Romans 8:1, Romans 5:1, John 10, John 3 & Matthew 28:20 are all great places to go. The Psalms also record David's bouts with depression and how the Lord encouraged him. Lead your mom to Psalms 27-57, read her Psalm 18, Psalm 56:8 and 2 Corinthians 7:6.
Pastor Mark did a Grace Talk program on the subject of depression, get a hold of a copy of that tape or CD. We'd also recommend the classic devotional "Steams in the Desert" by Mrs. Charles Cowman as a great daily encouragement. Many mighty Christians have suffered from short-term or long-term depression, --Charles Spurgeon, King David, the Apostle Paul and others. Jesus is the Light in any dark time! Never doubt in the darkness, what God has shown you in the light. |
