I wouldn't participate at all. We don't hand out candy at the door, that's participating. We don't dress up on the 31st because that's participating. Some parents even take their children out of school on October 31st. Bobbing for apples, besides being unsanitary, is a game that is traditionally played on Halloween. The tradition was at one time part of the celebration of the ancient Roman goddess of fertility, Pomona.
Pumpkin carving is part of the observance of Halloween - the Jack-o-lantern goes back to occultic roots. Unfortunately, Halloween is not a redeemable "holiday." It is pagan, and as a Christian, we're called to be separate and not have anything to do with it (see Ephesians 5:10-20). Following Jesus means we're different from the world (Romans 12:1-2). |
