Question / Issue
Did Christ BECOME SIN or just take onto himself our sins

Answer / Solution
Great question!

No, Christ, Himself, did not become sin. But He did, as our representative, take on the punishment for sin.

The Scripture indicates that Christ was 'without sin' (Heb. 4:15), and 'in Him is no sin' (1 John 3:5).  Further, Scripture states
that Christ took on Himself the sin of the world (John 1:29; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 2:2).

In the 2 Corinthians 5:21 passage that states: 'He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us".

The words “to be” are not in the Greek.  This verse could be translated that God “treated as sin” the one “who knew no sin.”

While Christ was on the cross as our representative, God treated Him as though He did have sin.  In this way, Christ
bore the punishment we deserved!
