As a Christian, as you delight yourself in God's word; He will begin to make the desires of your heart become more aligned with His own. Just as a child learns to hear and understand his parents, so, we as Christians learn and grow to understand God’s voice.
Psalms 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”
I encourage you to become more familiar with His word, and begin to speak with Him about your everyday life. As you do I’m confident He will bring scripture to your mind as you encounter everyday situations and concerns. As He does, know that He will never contradict His word. (The Bible)
Application:
God may bring to mind a friend who may be experiencing difficulties, and then impress on your heart to pray for them. That would fall in line with Leviticus 19:18, “…love your neighbor as yourself;”
Or, God may give you a burden for a missionary in another country, and then impress on your heart a desire to support them through prayer or your finances. That would agree with Mathew 25:35, “For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink.”
The point is to become familiar with God’s word. The desires and the things God “lays on your heart” should align with the Bible. If they do not, then it would be safe to discount them.
We know that we are saved if we have believed in Jesus, called on His name. The Bible is always true, so when our fallings or thoughts contradict it, believe the Bible.
