I am confused about when we die do we go directly to God and if so why does it say that when he returns first he raises the people up that had already died before he takes the believers that are still living?

Answer / Solution

The bodies of the deceased believers will be raised at that time, their spirits will have been with the Lord already.

2 Cor 5:8
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
