Question / Issue
Do you know if there is any reason Christians should not read Sarah Youngs devotional book called (Jesus Calling)? It's written as if Jesus was speaking directly to me and I heard that its not good because of that.

Answer / Solution
We do not recommend the book JESUS CALLING because of the claims and method of writing as described by the author, Sarah Young. She says that "I knew that God communicated with me through the Bible, but I yearned for more." That immediately raises a red flag that what is to follow is "more than" or "in addition to" what the Bible has to say. We are also not comfortable with the message being presented in first person from Jesus, purportedly received by waiting quietly in God's Presence, pencils and papers in hand, recording the messages she recieved from Him. We truly would never claim that kind of certainty for ourselves; who could possibly NOT include personal thoughts and interpretations in such a work? In time, for people who may use the book frequently, it is entirely possible that in their own prayers and devotions they will begin to hear "Jesus" speaking, not primarily through Scripture as we would expect, but through Sarah Young's words instead. Rather than actually bringing the believer into a more intimate relationship with Jesus, the book could easily replace what Jesus really wants to say to us personally with what Sarah Young imagines He would say.
