Question / Issue
Is there such a thing as christian evolution? Can you combine the belief in God with the evolution theory?

Answer / Solution

There is such a thing as theistic evolution, but the only Christian thing about it is that some very sincere Christians truly believe that God created in this fashion.  Basically, theistic evolution asserts that God essentially set all of the physical laws we’re aware of in motion and the universe eventually came to be.  Many theistic evolutionists are sincere and devout Christians who love the Lord deeply, but some are superficial Christians at best, or not even really saved.  This is not surprising since you’d find the same distribution of “true believers” relative to just about any doctrinal stance in Christendom.  Though it’s true that many professing Christians are not serious or perhaps not even truly saved, this is not a fruitful direction for doctrinal discourse.

Concerning the question of whether or not belief in God can be combined with evolutionary theory or not, the answer is “Yes;” in fact, it is already true that many people believe that God exists, and that He created using the mechanisms of evolution.  The real question is whether or not this is good theologically…and the answer to that question is a resounding NO!  Theistic evolution places the general revelation of nature over the special revelation of Jesus Christ and His word…a very big mistake as it pertains to theology proper.

Calvary Community Church holds to the Young Earth Doctrine of Creation which states, in accordance with the Genesis account of creation: God created the entire universe in six solar days no less than approximately six thousand years ago.  Currently, there is nothing but debate and division over how old things in the universe really are.  A more fruitful line of doctrinal unity relative to this debate would be to simply recognize that God created a “fully grown” universe and that we should not be surprised that some very old things have not been around for as long as they are old, according to certain scientific models.  We seem to forget that a supernatural agency of unlimited power created something from nothing…if we could ever figure this out, then perhaps a resolution to this debate can be achieved.

Though this is an important topic in the realm of Christian doctrine, it falls under the category of “non-essential” since it has no impact on salvation.  Compassion, unity, humility and basic love in the body of Christ are worth more than creation doctrine could possibly be.
