Basically, Jesus “preached” His victory over sin and death to the disobedient spirits in held captive in Sheol/Hades (the grave/hell). According to the parallel story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16 and Jesus’ promise to the repentant thief on the cross in Luke 23, we know that there was a place called “Paradise.” In Ephesians 4:8 we find that Jesus led a “host of captives.” It’s apparent that the guests of Paradise were transferred to heaven while the prisoners of Hades were left behind for the Great White Throne Judgment of Revelation, when death and Hades are tossed into the “Lake of Fire.”
It seems ridiculous to think that the One, who defeated sin and death by the sacrifice of His infinite and absolutely powerful life, would suffer in any way in hell. Jesus Christ would not even have stubbed His toe when He “kicked in” the gates of Hell (so to speak) the day that He conquered sin and death. The visit Jesus paid to the grave was a victory parade, not a death march. |
