Question / Issue
My friend is divorced and her daughter (13 yrs old)is saved - the ex-husband is not. The daughter is saying she doesn't want to be around her father anymore because he talks about ungodly things, using foul language, and mocks her about her Christianity. As a Christian mother, what biblically should her response be to her daughter?

Answer / Solution
This is a sad situation, and all too common. The reality is that the daughter will probably not be able to cut off all contact with the ex-husband until she is 18, and so they will have to make the best of things. If it gets too ridiculous, they could consult a lawyer about their options with the custody issue. In the meantime, the mother should take the position of supporting her daughter, that is, agreeing with her about the problem, listening to her complaints, and always recommending that they continue to pray for him.

The negative witness of the ex-husband can become a rallying point for the mother and daughter in their Christian walk. Praying for this man, rejecting his lifestyle and unbelief, and maintaining a Christian testimony will stregnthen them both, and who knows what the Lord might do in the future?
