Question / Issue

My husbands Grandmother believes that the grave is hell. Is there any scripture to support this??

Answer / Solution

No, the Bible doesn't support that idea, at least not in a literal sense. One one way, you could imagine the grave as death in a general sense, but even this isn't really hell. Jesus describes those who have died and where they are in Luke 16:19-31. There is Abraham's bosom on one side, and all those righteous people have now been taken to paradise with Jesus after the cross. On the other side, a place of torment where the unrighteous are awaiting judgment.  Even this is not exactly hell, as most people think of it, because the final judgment hasn't occurred yet. That's when the wicked are thrown into the Lake of Fire.
