Question / Issue
Is hypnosis something a Christian (someone I know) should consider doing in order to quit smoking?

Answer / Solution

The Bible doesn't mention Hypnotism by name, but we see the Bible warning people not to pray like the pagans do with countless repetitions.  What does this have to do with Hypnotism?  Hypnotism is entering what Dr. Charles Tart calls, "An altered state of consciousness".   Hypnotism places people in a mindset that is open to suggestion.

The power of suggestion is incredibly potent. In an altered state of consciousness, this power is significantly magnified as people become hyper suggestible. Add to this potion peer pressure plus enhanced expectations and people become willing to accept virtually anything that enters their minds.

First, it should be noted that some people are far more suggestible than others. Statistically, "one out of twelve Americans is susceptible to creating a memory out of thin air, then believing it."1 Such fantasy-proneness has been identified as the "Grade Five Syndrome."2 While Grade Five personalities are generally very intuitive and intelligent, they also have vivid, visual imaginations. Thus they are highly susceptible to the power of suggestion.

The Bible on the other hand says that we should be "Transformed by the renewing of our minds".  It also states that we should "Reason together" and that the Enemy is an adversary that we should not take too lightly.  I would suggest instead praying with some brothers and sisters.  Have your doctor suggest some alternatives.

Hypnosis places a person in an altered state of consciousness and could open one up to increased spiritual warfare. No one really knows how hypnosis works yet in today's cultural landscape of quick fixes many people are tempted to try it regardless of the possible negative long term effects. The main problem I see with hypnotism is that faith is shifted from God and His Word to the hypnotist and his technique.
