Question / Issue
What is Theophostics? Where does it come from, and is it biblical?

Answer / Solution

TheoPhostic’s is a prayer ministry designed to heal emotional hurts from the past that plague the present and threaten the future.  While the ministry acknowledges the fact that ALL healing is a work of God, the methodology seems to neglect two facts:

  1. That sin is not caused by “what we believe”; but rather, by the choice that we make in accordance with the desire of our heart.  Belief may certainly influence sin but it is not the primary cause.  Past hurts can cloud current and future judgment, but they cannot excuse a Christian from the Spirit of Truth that is speaking to their heart about present choices.
  2. The abundant life is designed such that those who are burdened shift their burdens to the Lord as opposed to burdening themselves with the task of facing and rejecting the lies of the past.  It is certainly good and right to face your problems and reject their falsehoods, but the procedural emphasis on this tends to minimize the fact that we are “new creations” empowered by God to be constantly renewed.

There are just as many critics of TheoPhostic Prayer Ministries as there are proponents.  Those who have enjoyed success in the program vigorously dispute the claim that it is not biblical.  They are sure that it is biblical because of the results and their understanding of what Scripture is saying.  We must remember that results do not confirm nor deny the biblical nature of any system.  It must be true to the Word of God as well as producing the kind of spiritual fruit that only God can produce.  Knowing the Truth that can set you free is relational knowledge of Jesus Christ, not just the falsehood of past experience.

The methodology is a fine tool for beginning to overcome the baggage of one’s past but it is insufficient for transformation and release from it.  TheoPhostic’s philosophy would affirm this fact; however, the general practice of their methodology seems to minimize it.  The philosophy of TheoPhostic’s has potential if the emphasis is shifted away from taking so much “action” on past beliefs and hurts and turned towards the transforming power of Truth Himself.
