Question / Issue
Why were the Pharisees so against believing in Jesus as the Messiah? They still were stuck on Moses Laws. Why did they say that a Prophet doesn't come from Galilee? Where did they get their information if they suppose to know the scriptures?

Answer / Solution

The Pharisees were masters of a Jewish religious philosophy characterized by the term “haggadah”.  Jesus, while also the Master of this, came to preach what Talmudic communities would call “halakah”.

Haggadah = the letter of the Law

Halakah = the intent of the Law

Matthew chapter five contains the Sermon on the Mount.  It is an excellent example of the difference between Haggadah and Halakah.  The following passage from Matthew five illustrates this point explicitly.

Matthew 5:21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'

22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty {enough to go} into the fiery hell.

The intent of the Law was a matter of the heart more than that of deeds.  This theme is repeated extensively by Jesus Christ Himself, as well as the Apostle Paul’s discourse throughout the New Testament.

Concerning the passage from John chapter seven which states, “They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee,” they were mistaken.  Jonah and Elijah were both from Galilee.  They had also managed to forget that the greatest Prophet would at least go there, if not come from there.

Isaiah 9:1 Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will soon be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory.

Though Jesus lived in Galilee for some time, he was born in Bethlehem; a significant town, to say the least.
