Question / Issue
What is askCalvary's stance on owning guns? Is it contrary to scripture to own or carry a gun for the purpose of defending oneself? How about the actual act of using the gun to defend oneself, and killing the other person?
Answer / Solution
The Bible is silent on gun rights; however, it is not silent on the right to defends ones self.
Some might cite the “turn the other cheek” passage as a blanket prohibition on violence…this is false. The context is pride, not self defense. Jesus and the apostles ministered to many soldiers and never once demanded that they lay down their weapons and stop being soldiers. The purpose of military force is to kill people and break things. Since the Lord never condemned the use of military force, and since God has commissioned the use of military force, it is difficult to say God is against the use force as it pertains to weaponry.
There is not enough scripture to form a particular doctrine on gun ownership, but there is certainly enough scripture to reject any prohibition on gun ownership or self defense.
