Cary's Bio

I was born in Moore, Oklahoma just outside of Oklahoma City where my grandfather still pastors a small Pentecostal Holiness church. During my childhood and adolescent years we moved quite a few times living mostly in Colorado (which I still call home), but also spending about 5 years in Phoenix. Church in my home was an on again off again experience. There were long periods where we would be going to church, followed by long periods of not going. When we were attending church it was typically of the Assemblies of God denomination.

I knew about Jesus growing up and that I needed Him to be saved, in fact I was often one of the first people to the altar when the pastor gave the invitation, and usually the last one to leave. I knew I was a sinner, but although I knew about Jesus and that I needed Him, I did not know that Jesus wanted to have a relationship with me. In my home, even when we were going to church, we did not talk about the Lord, we did not read the bible, and prayer was something for the dinner table, not for everyday life.

The summer before my sophomore year of high school my family moved from Phoenix to Colorado Springs, Colorado and never attended church together again. Unfortunately during these crucial times I had no spiritual influence in my life but, I was greatly influenced by the world. Though I always felt the Lord pulling at my heart, I chose to listen to the world and strive for all that it had to offer. Looking back on these times I can clearly see the Lord at work, keeping me from destroying my life. As I remember my past, I am constantly reminded of God’s patience and His loving kindness that led me to repentance.

After graduating from high school I moved back to Phoenix and began my “adult” life. In 1996 I met my future wife while at a party and we were married almost exactly a year later with one child already in tow.

Our marriage was far from “made in heaven” and we white knuckled it through our first few years. We ended up attending Calvary (our first church together) through a family member’s invitation in 1998. During the next year our marriage was on the brink of implosion. I was coming to Calvary, but I truly wanted nothing to do with God. Staci was pregnant with our second child and on bed rest. I was working three jobs and we were living separate lives. Fighting had become an everyday experience for us when we were together and this remained the status quo until Staci began her walk with the Lord in 2000. For a while I still fought the Holy Spirit as He was drawing me to Jesus, but in a climactic moment at the end of a horrible fight with my wife I finally saw the man I had become and cried out to Jesus to take me and make me new.

A few months later the Lord moved us to Charlotte, NC for what I thought was to be my slow rise to power as CEO of Bank of America. While things were going well on the job front I soon realized that God had us in Charlotte for growth of a different sort. We began attending a small (50-100 members) Calvary Chapel and soon the Lord was working in our lives as never before. I like to refer to this little church as a “hot house” because of the growth I saw in myself and others in this little church. Over time the Lord allowed me to become the worship pastor of this small fellowship and I believed this was where I would be spending the rest of my life. During this time we welcomed our third son into the world. About the time I was feeling comfortable, the Lord clearly told Staci and I to move back to Phoenix, and thus we ended up back here, and back at Calvary.

After a few months of being back I was asked if I would volunteer in the office once a week, and through this came on staff full-time in March of 2005 right after our first (and only) girl was born. I was asked to fill in teaching in the Fusion young adults class (now Revolution) in November of 2005, and I have had the pleasure of shepherding this awesome group of young adults ever since.
